In the wake of the shooting of Michael Brown by police in Ferguson, Missouri, the issue of excessive use of force by police departments is once again a topic of discussion.
In 1994, Congress passed the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. Among its provisions was the order that “the Attorney General shall, through appropriate means, acquire data about the use of excessive force by law enforcement officers.”
To date, this has not been done. This petition seeks to rectify that longstanding omission, as well as directing that such data be published annually.
