As shown by the derailment and fire in Quebec of a runaway train, transportation of hazardous liquids in single hull tankers can cause many deaths. Yet these hazardous materials are on trains running through both our countryside and our major cities. My children's elementary school had a safety drill that involved exiting the school and marching south, away from the major railway.
The lack of safety of single hull tankers was noted in a study in 1991.
There has been enough time for voluntary compliance, yet this current disaster shows the lack of care companies have for the safety of ordinary citizens.
It is time to make double hull rail tankers a legal requirement for the rail transport of hazardous liquids.
