The Star Spangled Banner became this country’s National Anthem in by Executive Order in 1916. The lyrics were written in 1814 by an anti-abolitionist lawyer and slave owner, and reflected the prevailing attitudes. Its melody requires a trained voice sign, and few citizens are aware there are four stanzas, the last two exalting free men and condemning slaves to death.
WE THE PEOPLE feel that this song does not represent this country’s values and the rights we hold dear. We petition the Government to, by Executive Order if necessary, remove the last two stanzas from the official version of the song to bring its meaning more in line with our national conscience. As our National Anthem, it is important that it clearly represents what this country represents.
