Outlaw all handguns and automatic/semiautomatic weapons in the United States. Citizens may own single action long guns.

The change I propose is drastic. There are many powerful people that will oppose my proposition, but we the people hold the power to change our future. I propose we outlaw all handguns; the number one type of weapon used to kill. Of course military and police will still carry these weapons as well as a select handful of highly trained and licensed civilian personal. The second major change will be the outlaw of all automatic or semiautomatic weapons. The above mentioned personal may still receive exemption. The average American can still own single action rifles and shotguns for sport and self-defense, but must be trained and licensed and pass a national background check.
