Elections are no longer about ideas, they are about money. Billions of dollars are poured into commercials for candidates, and all efforts at reform have failed. Ads do not educate the public. They provide a high profile podium for lies and slander, and the more money a candidate has, the better chance they have to win.
It is illegal to advertise cigarettes on television. The same sort of ban should be applied to political advertisement. Let candidates make their case on the radio, in magazines, on billboards, and through the internet. But remove them from our television screens.
