The practice of including "riders" in bills is a dangerous one that allows for back door dealings and insidious lobbying to infect an otherwise benign bill, forcing the POTUS into signing into law provisions that he or she might otherwise not endorse if not for the fact that he or she is tacitly forced to because of their inclusion in a crucial, time-sensitive bill such as a budget or spending bill.
This practice, along with pork barrel politicking and earmarking, is antithetical to a transparent government. Movement away from this brand of lawmaking would allow for a more streamlined and honest form of governance, which might galvanize the people and re-inspire American faith in our leadership while ensuring lobbying and cronyism by corporate interests does not rule the day.
