Outlaw privately owned prisons.

Created by C.M. on November 17, 2012

It is morally reprehensible that citizens have a profit motive for imprisoning fellow citizens. The United States, the Land of the Free, imprisons more of its citizens than any other nation on the planet, including Russia and China. This is partly because the prison industry lobbies for tougher laws so that they can lock more people up and make more money in the process. Prison labor now competes with free labor to keep wages down. Privately owned prisons are a stain on our nation's name, and must be outlawed if we are to have any moral authority to criticize other countries' human rights abuses. It is currently legal for the same people who own prisons to own schools. Prisons for profit have destroyed millions of peoples' lives, and they should not be allowed to continue.
