We think a school's highest priority should be given to teaching students academic skills they will need to survive as adults: expelling students for a variety of micro-behaviors instead of teaching them those academic skills fails compulsory education's primary goal. When schools expel students over minor issues, they ignore those students' future well beings. One wonders whether such expulsions are cruel and unusual punishment. There are times when such severe punishments seem needed and justified, such as violence. Failure to wear an ID tag does not seem to rise to a standard of dangerous student behavior sufficient to justify the severity of an expulsion
