In the United States the practice of male infant genital mutilation is legal and widely practiced. given that fifty-seven percent of all males born in 2013 were circumcised, at least one million infants last year were separated from a healthy part of their body for no medical reason. Infant genital mutilation is a violation of human rights and the rights to bodily autonomy of the mutilated infant.
Research shows that infant circumcision causes the same neurological trauma as an amputation, resulting in PTSD and decreased appetite in infants. Even with anesthetic, an infant will feel pain during the procedure and for up to two weeks after.
One hundred infants die every year because of complications related to circumcision. These deaths are preventable and unnecessary.
