At the moment there is nothing requiring American public schools to teach the subject of evolution. Conversely, there is nothing requiring them to teach intelligent design.
Children for the most part understand that there is quite a controversy between the ideology of the two topics, but children for the most part do not learn both sides of the debate.
It can be said that in order to fully be capable of presenting one's opinion on a subject that they should first understand all of the sides of the argument. Our children should be taught those standards early, to prepare them for a lifetime of having to pass judgement on topics, large and small, on a day to day basis.
