Unpaid internships exploit young people and make it increasingly difficult for the generation entering the job market to become self-sufficient, contributing members of society. Internships are typically offered in specific niche career paths where other skills and education are prerequisite. Individuals who have already deferred their careers and put forth significant expense in order to obtain a proper education are expected to work for free while even unskilled labor positions are entitled to minimum wage. Students graduate college harnessed with mountains of debt and no opportunity to apply their education towards making a living and paying off that debt. Corporations benefit from the hard work of their unpaid interns while displacing paid workers.
