Since 1977, the fragile and scarce American blood supply has lost out on millions of healthy pints of blood and thus, lost many lives by turning away eligible gay and bisexual male donors. Pre-screening blood today can detect HIV in the blood before it reaches the patient. Since intravenous drug users and sex workers are allowed to donate blood, there's no practical reason to exclude monogamous or HIV negative gay men from donating blood, other than irrational fear and intimidation.
