Overturn Citizens United With A Constitutional Amendment

Created by J.J. on January 01, 2013

"Citizens United," the Supreme Court decision granting corporations legal status as "persons," gave corporations the right to free speech and refused to limit the money they can inject into our political process.

A corporation is not a person -- it's the result of human activity, and no more a person than a toaster, which is also created by human activity. Therefore, it has no "rights."

The people within the corporation enjoy individual rights. If corporations are persons, they should be subject to the same donation limits, and tax rates, as individuals. Barring this amendment, they should be taxed as individual persons based on earnings.

The U.S. constitution should be amended to declare that things, such as corporations, are not people, and do not enjoy the legal rights of persons.
