Marissa Alexander, a victim of domestic violence, was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and sentenced to 20 years for firing a warning shot. On August 1, 2010, Alexander returned to her former home to gather some belongings. Unbeknownst to her, her estranged husband—against whom she had a restraining order—was also at the residence. Alexander fearing for her life went to her vehicle to obtain a her legally acquired firearm. She fired a warning shot, which injured no one and was directed towards a wall. Alexander's case reveals not only a callous disregard for the plight of victims of domestic abuse, but also the endurance of racial prejudice. Send a message to the Obama Administration that we will no longer tolerate this blatant perversion of the Justice System.
