Attorney Lynne Stewart, has spent most of her 32-year professional life representing clients who might otherwise have been unprotected from the justice system. She has had cancer for several years. It has metastasized.
In the 1990s she represented Omar Abdel-Rahman, also known as "the blind sheikh." Stewart sometimes violated special administrative measures. Nearly ten years afterwards, the Bush administration indicted Stewart and declared her guilty.
Lynne Stewart is serving a ten year sentence but has less than a year to live per her cancer doctor. It is time and past time for her "compassionate release," but the system is dragging its feet. It is now time for the president to use his power to let Lynne Stewart spend her last months with her family rather than among jailers.
