On June 28, 2015, Brittany "Bree" Newsome climbed the flagpole at the South Carolina statehouse, taking down its Confederate flag. She was then arrested and charged with defacing a monument, which she did to act out against racism. The Confederate flag is built on hatred and racial intolerance, and it had no place in a government building to begin with. She should not be punished; she should be treated like a hero. Our goal is to see that Brittany Newsome and her spotter, James Tyson, free of charges for their heroic act.
