John Arthur ("Jack") Johnson was an American boxer with a career plagued by discrimination. Johnson won the title of World Heavyweight Boxing Champion in 1908 and held the title until 1915. Johnson offended white supremacist by having twice married white women, and then knocking out James J. Jeffries aka "Great White Hope."
In 1912 Johnson was convicted of violation the Mann Act when he transported a white women, who would later become his wife, across state lines. He was sentenced to a year in prison, but fled to Europe while released on bond pending appeal. He was a fugitive for 7 yrs before surrendering in 1920.
