Michael Giles was standing outside apart from a bar fight looking for friends not involved in the fight. He was randomly attacked, verified by his attacker, and was punched to the ground. Fearing for his life, he drew a legally owned and permitted hand gun and fired at his attacker. No one was killed, and the father of three with multiple overseas deployments was charged and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Giles had, up to that point, led a positive life serving in the Air Force. A defense from an unprovoked assault should not result in 25 years in prison.
