In the interest of the people, elected officials should have their income capped at the median pay of the constituents in which they represent. This provides a reward based scale based on how the elected official is performing for there community and how individuals within that community are being served by their official. It would also remove the draw to the position for individuals not set on bettering the communities they serve but rather just in it for the pay.
The average pay for a Senator or Representative is $174,000 per year (2011-2012). While the median pay for Americans in the United States ranges from $35,000 to $66,000 depending on location. If these elected officials were to be capped at median incomes, it may drive these officials to focus more on the constituents they serve
