Some of the most important and recent pieces of legislation to become law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the Dodd Frank Wall Street and Consumer Protection Act, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, the Higher Education Opportunity Act, and the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 are all over 400 pages in length. Lengthy legislation is dubious in the sense that it emasculates government transparency and creates an environment where suspect laws intending to invade our privacy or attenuate our Constitutional rights can be easily passed. It also holds the potential to cost taxpayers millions if not billions of dollars in assisted legal fees as related bureaucracies’ struggle with the question of how best to implement it.
