All government officials should be paid an hourly wage no more than $45 with taxes applicable to them the same as the rest of America. True officials that spent countless hours working on things that would benefit their constituents should be paid more than those politicians who would rather vacation. Guidelines should be drawn as to what qualifies "work". From attending events to preparing speeches. However, sleeping should not be qualified as "work". This alone would cap government salaries which are grotesquely high as it is as well as give some incentive for the government to WANT to work for it's people.
