Because Congress will be working 126 of the approximately 248 normal work days in 2013, they should be considered part-time employees, and should receive the same pay and benefits that most part-time employees receive: $8.25 an hour, with no health insurance, life insurance, or pension. This will allow each member of Congress to earn about $8,316 per year.
Currently we pay more than $75.6 million each year in congressional salaries. Giving Congress part-time pay and benefits for part-time work will cut federal spending by approximately $72 million.
If Congress is as concerned with the federal deficit as they claim to be, and if they are as fiscally conservative as they claim to be, they should see clearly how this proposal makes good business sense.
