Peg federal student loan interest rates and borrowing caps to the projected demand for the degree received

Created by N.H. on June 22, 2013

Constantly we hear stories of graduates entering the workforce with grim employment prospects and a crushing student loan debt that they are unlikely to repay in full. We also hear complaints from companies that too few Americans have the education and skills necessary (especially in the STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math disciplines) to fill job openings.

Why not encourage students entering college to pick fields that are well paying and in high demand?

This can be done by offering incentives via the federal student loan program by offering lower interest rates for students earning degrees in fields with good employment prospects, while capping borrowing for students choosing a degree in fields that offer less employment potential.
