For some years now, the quality of news has been deteriorating in the United States. News organizations have been growing less and less honest. Thus, my proposal is simple: a push to reform defamation law so that news organizations have to be able to prove a certain amount of truth in their reporting.
The need for this should be evident. Both Fox and MSNBC were found by Pew to "report" more opinions on air than actual facts; their third rival, CNN, was only marginally better.
While I recognize that the law provides for not being able to verify all facts, major news organizations have enough resources to be able to verify most of what they ought to be telling.
President Obama, no democracy flourishes left in the dark. So for the sake of the country, turn on the light.
