The penny an utterly useless coin that costs more to make than it is worth, can buy nothing (and if you wanted to buy something with pennies, you would get a real workout) and just takes up space. Back when the half cent was discontinued, it was worth more than a dime today, but for some reason no one will discontinue the penny despite being so useless. In many other countries their respective versions of the cent have been discontinued and they round purchases to the nearest 5 cents.
