The life and work of Harvey Bernard Milk should be nationally recognized. Long lauded as an activist in the LGBTQ community, he worked tirelessly to represent those who were misunderstood and under-represented.
Since his assassination in 1978, Milk has continued to be a an influential voice in the LGBTQ community that should also inspire the larger context of civil discourse in the United States.
As the country continues to grapple with the equality of marriage, what better time than now to declare a national day in recognition of a man who sought to bridge differences and forge a society that not only gave lip-service to, but actually embraces, equality?
