Traditionally, NOAA has been the only entity in the United States to name severe weather systems (storms).
Lately, the Weather Channel has started naming storms to create drama and boost ratings.
This practice should be prohibited. When NOAA names a storm, it uses specific, scientific criteria. Naming a storm makes an impression on the public. It creates awareness and prompts people to take action, possibly saving lives.
Allowing any entity other than NOAA to name storms, using whatever criteria they wish, dilutes the impact of the named storm. If every storm is named people will start ignoring the really dangerous storms, resulting in unnecessary death.
