Many US troops and contractors owe their lives to the translators that risked both themselves and their families to support Americans in Iraq and Afghanistan. Unfortunately, the visa process is long and complex, and takes an estimated three years to complete. Few do, because while they wait for visas in a warzone, our enemies target their families. Congress has already passed legislation permitting these groups to apply for visas, and has a precedent in the Vietnam war of bringing South Vietnamese and their families who supported US troops to Guam so they could complete applications without threat of retaliation or exposure to the NVA. We need a similar solution to protect translators and their families from the Taliban and other extremist groups while they secure visas.
