Landon Donovan has served his country in international soccer competitions for many years as a member of the USMNT (U.S. men's national team). He has scored 49 international goals, more than any other USMNT player in history. He has five World Cup goals, more than any other North American player in history, including his last-gasp goal against Algeria that advanced the U.S. to the knockout rounds of the 2010 World Cup. He has appeared in 144 international matches. And he has done all this in the face of criticism from many unappreciative fans.
He has temporarily stepped away from the USMNT. We petition President Obama to personally contact him, thank him for his service to his country, and ask him to rejoin the USMNT as soon as possible to lead them to the 2014 World Cup.
