In order to protect truly the American ideal of equality under the law, Congress should amend Flag Code to remove the phrase "Under God" from the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance. This phrase, recited by schoolchildren across the nation, engenders a non-secular (and arguably unconstitutional) and government-supported view of God as the one Lord, relegating any American schoolchild or government representative of non-Christian faith and their beliefs to a secondary position in society. The rote recitation of the Pledge's religious content creates an environment that suppresses individual dissent from American society's predominant form of religious belief; as such, it represses individual speech. Petition the Obama Administration to support legislation removing this phrase.
