The citizens of Monroe County Michigan, on behalf of Monroe County Drug Enforcement Unit (M.A.N.T.I.S.) request designation as a High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area, commonly known as HIDTA, in order to gain HIDTA funding to enhance and enforce drug control efforts in our community.
Monroe County has the highest rate of drug deaths and drug addiction in the entire state of Michigan. SEMCA, (Southeast Michigan Community Alliance) has reported a 294% increase in opiate & heroin addiction treatment in Monroe County from 2008-2013. In 2013, Monroe County Substance Abuse Coalition reported that there were over 40 drug overdose deaths in Monroe County alone.
Our law enforcement is severely understaffed, with approximately 40 officers, the same number of staffed officers as in 1940.
