Voter turnout has dropped with each passing election cycle. As this continues, fringe elements within the two main Parties will continue to hold disproportionate amounts of power. This is, a failing of the American people. The Separation of Powers ensured by the constitution gives Congress and the Senate Considerable power, but research shows, those elected to office are beholden to fringe groups within their parties. Groups that, by and large, do not represent the collective beliefs of the nation and yet have an iron grip on their candidates priorities, due to the fact that they vote in midterm elections at much higher rates than do young people, people of color, those in poverty, the elderly etc. Mandatory voting would paint a more accurate picture of a modern, less extreme United States
