Petition to have more thorough background checks or licencing for those that want to buy assault weapons instead of bans

I personally believe that although some terrible crimes have been carried out with assault rifle based weapon designs, that instead of banning them all together, creating a law requiring the owner to have a paid licence for such a weapon, or, rather that the background checks be more thorough to include immediate family and health records of the potential owners, will potentially prevent these weapons falling into the wrong hands. As the armament industry of the United States accounts for a large part of the economy; it would be detrimental to our economy to prevent them from producing said weapons, costing jobs and money.
