The President is in a unique position to promote national unity but this will not happen by pandering to interest groups. Similarly, the DOJ should not be used as a cynical device to fuel unrealistic expectations among Americans with genuine concerns. These strategies engender resentment and quite possibly even violence toward law enforcement, undermine due process and respect for the judicial system and degrade the morale and add to a siege mentality among law enforcement at a time when they are clearly needed.
Put simply, the President needs to clearly state that not every undesirable outcome is the result of racism and that grievance groups need to acknowledge that both sides need to come to an understanding by education, behavioral change and training.
