Petition to Lower the Minimum Legal Drinking Age in The United States

Created by K.M. on January 30, 2013

We, the undersigned, call on the White house to lower the drinking age in the United States to 18. We believe that turning 18 and becoming an adult should give every resident of the United States the freedom to makes their own decisions (such as the right to vote, serve on juries, and serve in the military). Per capita incidences of drinking and driving in countries such as the Australia and Great Britain are far lower than in the United States despite the legal drinking age of 18 in both countries (based on data from the CDC). Furthermore, lowering the minimum legal drinking age to 18 will prevent underage teen drinking in unsafe environments which often promote binge drinking. We believe that reducing the taboo around alcohol usage would lead to more moderate alcohol consumption.
