Petition to regulate the price of gas based on the current gouging of consumers.

Consumers and businesses are at the mercy of the oil companies for the price at the pump. We need the governments help by creating a Driver's Inalienable Rights Tax (DIRT). The way this would work is to set a baseline of $2.50 a gallon at which point there would be no extra tax. Then for every $0.25 increase in the retail price of gas, the government would charge a $0.40 tax on the oil companies. So, if gas went to $2.75 the gas company would net $2.35. If it went up to $3, the net would be $2.20. At the current price, around $3.50, the net would be $1.90. At the recent high of $4.50, the net would be $1.30. The $2.50 baseline is generous as there is no shortage of gas and output still can handle demand. The government takes care of the people and the economy will respond quickly.
