Petition in Support of Democracy in Egypt against Military Crackdown

Since the military deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and suspended the constitution on July 3rd, over 300 civilian protesters were killed and thousands injured. The majority of the casualties were shot by state forces. These developments threaten freedom of expression and political association through a peaceful democratic process. Regression from the democratic process in Egypt may lead to deepening the mistrust in democracy in the Arab and Muslim worlds and motivating militant insurgencies. We call upon the US to condemn the military crackdown and the use of violence by any political group in Egypt, call for the immediate restoration of a constitutional process to resolve the leadership crisis, and suspend military aid to Egypt until an elected civilian administration is instated.
