The very idea that a penny were genuine copper, a nickel actually pure nickel, or quarters & dimes pure silver, would change the way people thought of the coin, increasing its perceived value (not to mention the fact that each current penny is two cents worth of zinc, more expensive to the Mint than if it were pure copper). Additionally, a pure gold dollar (or ten dollar) coin would also bolster the value of US money in the minds of both citizens & non-citizens. By simply returning to actual copper, nickel, silver, & gold in coins, it would be a gradual but positive effect on the value of US money. This is not advocating returning to a gold-backed dollar in the Federal Reserve (not yet), this is just a request to stop minting fake coins, and phase in real copper, nickel, silver, and gold.
