One of the most cost effective ways to slow down climate change and improve the health of our air and water is to phase out the burning of coal for energy production. Coal has a long history of adverse effects on the environment and human health from smog to acid rain and now Mercury in our air and water. Coal is the largest producer of Greenhouse Gas causing Climate Change.
Coal-fired electricity-generating power plants emitted an estimated 48 tons of mercury in 1999, the largest source of man-made mercury pollution in the U.S. Mercury is deadly and it is being spewed into the air we breathe.
The time has come to phase out the use of coal for energy production in favor of alternatives that overall are much less expensive and will improve the quality of our air and water.
