All new federal employees (including congress and the presidency) will not be eligible for a federal pension. They can contribute to a 401(k) with a government match 50% of the first 6% that you contribute under the pre-tax and Roth 401(k) contribution. There will be a vesting schedule for the matching funds of 25% each year over a 4 year period.
Existing federal employees may also participate in the 401(k) program with identical rules/restrictions as new employees with the exception that length of service is applied to the waiting period, therefore if you served 4 or more years you vesting period is complete.
Existing federal employees cease to acrue addition 1% of salary per year of service.
Intent is to give federal employees the same retirement options as most private employees.
