We ask the president work with legislators to create a national law or 50 similar state laws that will phase out smoking over the next decade or two by raising the legal smoking age by one year, each year after the law is adopted. This will have the effect of keeping young people from starting to smoke. It will also gradually increase the age difference between those who can and those who can't smoke. After a decade the age difference will become generational and young people will no longer feel pressured by their peer group to start smoking. After 20 years, smoking will become a problem only among older people, who will have to quit anyway because the lack of new smokers will have the effect of making cigarrettes very expensive. Eventually this will lead to a smoke free America.
