Patients with terminally ill diseases and cancers can be assisted, if they so choose, with the ending of their life. Eligibility is determined by the following: must be 18 years of age or older, capable of making and communicating health care decisions for him/herself; and diagnosed with a terminal illness that will lead to death within six months. Two physicians must determine whether these criteria have been met.
There are already places outside of the United States that are organizations that specifically cater to the terminally ill (Dignitas). This be legalized so we can end the suffering of many terminally ill patients. Medication and therapy only alleviate small portions of patients discomfort, and this offers them some form of dignity in one of the last decisions they should control.
