If the typical suburban public school is essentially a pen of sheep, ripe for the wolves, then it seems obvious that a shepherd is needed. Instead of ineffectual, unarmed security guards, why not post an armed police officer at the front entrance? If nothing else, it ought to ensure that the response to any such crisis is swifter than the 15 minutes it may take to coordinate an effective 911 response. This is the most commonsense solution available. It's a small change, and it will work while not infringing upon anybody's constitutional rights. The time is now, Mr. President.
