Dr. Shakil Afridi is a Pakistani physician who assisted the Central Intelligence Agency in an attempt to capture Osama Bin Laden. Dr. Afridi ran a fake vaccination program in Abbottabad, Pakistan to verify Bin Laden's presence in the area. While Afridi's attempt failed, the raid to kill Bin Laden was ultimately successful. Afridi was caught fleeing Pakistan and charged with treason. He was sentenced to 33 years in prison and has claimed the Pakistani government has subjected him to torture. If helping the United States target Bin Laden is considered treason, Pakistan's relationship with the United States needs serious re-evaluation. Dr. Afridi should be freed from prison and honored for his heroic efforts to locate Bin Laden.
