place an immediate ban on unpaid internships.

Created by V.S. on January 10, 2013

We humbly urge the administration to place an immediate ban on all unpaid internships in this country. First, despite the arguments put forth by CEOS looking for free labor, the fact is that unpaid internships constitute modern-day slavery. There is no getting around that fact.
Second, unpaid internships reduce the ability of otherwise highly qualified students and recent graduates from low-income backgrounds to move up the socioeconomic ladder by gaining experience; in other words, by their very nature, only the children of the rich can afford to go months without being paid anything for their work.
Perhaps it would be poetic justice that the nation's first black president end this version of slavery.
