Tobacco products left lying around are a threat to our nation's infants and toddlers. According to the George Washington University Medical Center's National Capital Poison Center, "As little as 1 milligram (mg) of nicotine can cause symptoms in an infant. One whole cigarette has 13-30 mg of nicotine, while one cigarette butt contains 5-7 mg." They further state that "Severe poisoning can be life threatening and lead to seizures."
Almost everyone knows about the dangers of smoking, but few seem aware of the danger of leaving tobacco where small children can reach it. This information belongs on the packaging of all tobacco products: cigarettes, cigars, loose tobacco, chewing tobacco, snuff, even E-cigarettes. One child killed or harmed because of an adult's ignorance is one too many.
