Given that northcentral Arkansas and southcentral Missouri are located in Tornado Alley and that the nearest National Weather Service radar stations are located in Little Rock AR and Springfield MO, over a hundred miles in either direction, a need exists for a radar station between the two.
Currently, due to a number of factors -- distance, terrain, the curvature of the earth, weather happening between the area and the radar sites, and something called "range fold" -- radar images for the area are not accurate for ground level.
Tornadoes are a common phenomenon in the area during the spring and summer, and many lives are lost every year. A more accurate and complete radar system to fill in the coverage gap would lead to more warning time and save lives.
