The #1 objectively verifyable cause of boating accidents is excessive speed, according to the US Coast Guard's annual report compiling data from all 50 states. Yet million dollar speedboats are allowed to race on our lakes and rivers at speeds in excess of 100 mph. There currently are no restrictions against such recklessness even on busy family recreational lakes such as Lake Lanier in Atlanta where "Poker Runs" draw dozens of 100 mph+ race boats flying between sailboats and pontoon boats terrorizing and endangering familes and children. Long ago we put speed limits on our roads. It is well past time to do the same on our public waterways. If they want to go faster than 60 mph, they need to do so more than 3 miles offshore or in private lakes.
