Place restrictions on what one can purchase with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, eliminating junk food.

Created by H.K. on January 18, 2013

46 million Americans are on food stamps and 1 in 6 Americans are on Medicaid. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) allows low-income Americans to use taxpayer dollars to purchase any kind of junk food including chips, cookies, and ice cream. It is not sustainable nor ethical to use taxpayer dollars to purchase food which will harm the health of those who also rely on taxpayers to pay for their medical services. SNAP should introduce new restrictions so that in addition to alcohol and cigarettes, certain food products that are detrimental to one's health are removed from the list of eligible "supplemental nutrition." Currently eligible items are listed here: http://www.fns.usda.gov/snap/retailers/eligible.htm
