There is no need to "fix" Social Security for decades to come. To try to do this breeds controversy because it is too big a bite to swallow all at once in the present heated political climate.
I propose that a small adjustment be made now with the commitment that the Trustees review the trajectory three years hence when another small adjustment can then be made and so on each three years.
Since the projections are based on assumptions of GDP growth, employment, etc. the reviews will continually test the assumptions which can themselves be adjusted in each new forecast.
This defuses the underlying political agendas that form the controversy in the present climate.
Moreover we would be constantly
testing our previous solutions rather than leaping to crisis after crisis as we have done.
